ICE detains Mississippi father at citizenship interview. Mississippi Independent told the story first.

When Kasper Eriksen, a Danish national and father of four who has lived and worked in Mississippi for more than a decade, was detained by ICE during his final citizenship interview, we were the first to report it. Eriksen, of Starkville, was arrested because of a “paperwork miscommunication” dating back to 2015. Our reporting garnered local and international attention, resulting in coverage across Mississippi and as far as Denmark.
This story is independent journalism in action. With the decline of conventional media, we need this type of reporting more than ever, but it can’t happen without support. That’s where you come in.
As a nonprofit news site, The Mississippi Independent fills gaps in traditional news coverage with precise, objective and factual stories reported on by our collective of nonprofit advocates and freelance journalists.
Why your support matters:
It fuels independent reporting. Your subscription empowers journalism to uncover injustices and hold people in power accountable.
It leads to impact. Our coverage of Kasper Eriksen’s case brought worldwide attention to a reality so many immigrants are facing in the current moment.
It brings journalism to the people. When you support The Mississippi Independent, you’re supporting a network of local journalists who care deeply about the people and places they cover, telling stories that matter to Mississippi families with impacts reaching across the country and the world.
