As disasters continue to devastate American communities, the federal government has consistently shown up to help them recover. Time and time again, federal agencies have provided critical support for impacted communities, delivering essential resources to help them recover and rebuild.
With President Trump in office, however, federal disaster relief initiatives are under attack, facing threats of elimination.
As part of his Project 2025 agenda, President Trump ordered a review of federal disaster relief and froze federal disaster aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Small Businesses Administration (SBA), and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Citing systemic inefficiencies and political bias within federal disaster relief initiatives, President Trump argues that states would be better off managing the enormous cost of disaster relief themselves.
However, with climate change causing an increasing frequency of disasters, states do not have the resources needed to repeatedly rebuild on their own.
While FEMA provides an immediate response to disaster relief, HUD and SBA help communities rebuild in the long-term by funding responses to housing shortages and revitalizing local businesses. Attacking federal disaster relief efforts and stripping away critical aid from states is a refusal to accept the severity of climate change and the effects that it has on American communities.
President Trump and Elon Musk’s DOGE committee have already fired more than 200 FEMA employees, including the agency’s chief financial officer, with more cuts planned for the imminent future. These funding uncertainties are already impacting key disaster relief preparedness efforts, with key personnel losing training opportunities to help them better serve communities during the next disaster. Furthermore, cuts to HUD are already having an impact on communities recovering from disaster, with survivors in western North Carolina fearing that essential funding will be delayed, and local HUD offices slated to be completely cleared of personnel. Without these federal agencies, people will be left stranded after a climate disaster – we have to take a stand and demand protection for federal disaster relief!
We cannot sit idly by while President Trump, Elon Musk and DOGE make yet another attack on an essential federal agency. With your help, we can stop President Trump from eliminating FEMA and ensure that millions of Americans continue to get the aid that they need.
Onward,
