Wildfires Burn As Trump Wants to Annex Greenland1.8.24It’s Wednesday evening and welcome back to Today’s American News, your source of news and analysis for the circus that is American politics and entertainment. Our thoughts are with the people of California as wildfire continues to burn. Supreme Court Justice Alito takes phone call from Trump… America’s bought-and-paid-for U.S. Supreme Court is yet again acting to serve the needs of convicted felon Donald Trump. This time, Justice Samuel Alito “said he spoke with President-elect Donald Trump by phone this week in support of a former law clerk who is seeking a job in the incoming administration,” according to CNN. Talk about unethical. People of our country should have zero confidence in the court after yet another example of their unwavering allegiance to the man who shaped the court and led to the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Alito knows better, both generally and because “came one day before Trump filed an emergency appeal seeking to delay his Friday sentencing in his New York hush money case.” Trumpworld angry at GOP Senate for not being ready to approve Cabinet picks… Some good news, maybe? Politico writes, “With less than two weeks until Donald Trump takes the oath of office, only a small handful of his nominees appear on track for immediate confirmation — sparking tensions between the Senate GOP and Trump’s inner circle.” One of Trump’s picks, Matt Gaetz for attorney general, is out but many other unqualified and unacceptable picks remain. Among them are C-list Fox News Host Pete Hegseth for defense secretary and Tulsi Gabbard for intelligence chief. Gabbard has never worked in intelligence, met with deposed Syrian mass murderer Bashar al-Assad, and pedals Kremlin talking points on the war in Ukraine. European leaders have had it with Trump’s threats to annex Greenland… Trump and MAGA supporters might be giddy about taking Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal, but our allies across the pond aren’t having any of it. NBC noted European leaders have “expressed confusion” about Trump’s comments. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a statement “the principle of inviolability of borders applies to every country, regardless of whether it is to the east or west of us.” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said in a radio interview that the threat is serious if not real, saying “if you’re asking me whether I think the United States will invade Greenland, my answer is no.” 24 million Americans’ health care is at risk under Trump… A record number of Americans (24 million) now have health insurance and a record number of Americans (300 million) have some form of coverage. The 300 million figure translates to 92 percent of people in this country. The Biden Administration celebrated the milestones today under the backdrop of a looming Trump presidency in which threats to Americans’ health coverage is real. Biden policy advisor Neera Tanden noted the U.S. “once again set a new all-time record for marketplace enrollment" and has done so “every year of the Biden-Harris administration.” Today’s Buzz “Apocalyptic angst” takes over Hollywood amid wildfires… Yesterday, we told you about California wildfires, and today, there is talk of an “apocalypse” in Hollywood. The wildfires aren’t near Tinseltown as it stands, but that hasn’t stopped the entertainment industry from having some big worries. The Hollywood Reporter notes that many stars including Mark Hamill have been evacuated. Paris Hilton has lost her home. Hamill and Hilton are just two of many stars impacted.
