SENATOR TAMMY DUCKWORTH EXEMPLIFIES THE IMPORTANCE OF
WOMEN WHO HEROICALLY SERVE IN THE MILITARY TO DEFEND THE NATION!
"If you train men to treat women as equals in combat, they'll treat them as equals at home." – Pete Hegseth. (To be clear, he was saying that is a bad thing.)
Trump’s nominee for Department of Defense is an unacceptable choice to lead the Department of Defense. Fox News personality Pete Hegseth is not only completely unqualified to lead the incredibly large and complicated Defense Department, he’s made his anti-women, anti-LGBTQI+, and racist beliefs clear. Even worse, he has been credibly accused of sexual assault and other sexual misconduct. He would be a dangerous pick to lead our country’s military. Pete Hegseth’s nomination is unacceptable, and here’s why: - Hegseth is a Fox News commentator, not a government or military leader. Hegseth never held a high position when he served in the National Guard and he has no prior government experience, but now he is supposed to run the largest U.S. government agency and one of the most complicated organizations in the world.
- He was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2017 and entered into a financial settlement with her that included a gag order. Grotesquely, he is now threatening to retaliate against her by suing her. This should be disqualifying for any leadership position, and it renders him especially unfit to lead the Defense Department given the long history of the Department’s failure to respond appropriately to sexual assault of female service members. Hegseth would turn back the clock for survivors of sexual assault in the military.
- He has a history of other misconduct. Hegseth was forced to step down from two veterans’ organizations after being accused of alcohol abuse, sexual misconduct, and mismanaging the group’s money. Moreover, while he was in the National Guard, he was barred from serving at President Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration because he was seen as an insider threat due to his tattoos connecting him to white supremacist groups.
- He does not believe women should be permitted to serve in combat roles, as he reiterated only days before his nomination. For more than a decade, all combat positions in the military have been open to women who meet the same demanding standards as other servicemembers, and women have time and again risen to that challenge. Hegseth’s contempt toward women would weaken our military.
- He has consistently made comments that are anti-women, racist, and anti-LGBTQI+. Hegseth has made numerous comments that are anti-women, racist, and anti-LGBTQI+. Hegseth not only opposes women in combat, he also promised to kick trans servicemembers out of the military and said, “The dumbest phrase on planet Earth in the military is ‘our diversity is our strength.’” Hegseth has argued that the military is for "strong, normal men," ignoring the fact that women make up almost 18 percent of active-duty military.
Senators need to make it clear: Pete Hegseth is an unacceptable and dangerous nominee for the Department of Defense. Tell the Senate that we deserve a qualified nominee who values the service and sacrifices of women and trans people in our military. In solidarity, Emily Martin she/her Chief Program Officer National Women's Law Center |
