Happy Tuesday! With only two days until Thanksgiving we hope you are winding down and getting ready to spend quality time with loved ones. Today’s American News is back in your inbox as promised, bringing you news and analysis on the corn maze that is American politics and entertainment.

Biden helps clinch ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon… Fighting still rages on across the Middle East but today provided a bright spot: Israel and Lebanon reach a ceasefire deal that will likely bring to a half the conflict between Israel and the Southern Lebanon-based Hezbollah after a months-long war that killed thousands in the region. President Biden helped broker the deal and announced details at a White House press conference earlier today.

World gets nervous as Trump goes on fresh tariff rant… Foreign leaders are getting nervous about a series of posts threatening massive tariffs against Canada(!), Mexico, and China (the USA’s three largest trading partners, in that order). Politico quotes a Trump advisor and top GOP senator claiming Trump isn’t serious about the tariff amounts; rather, it’s just his way of negotiating. It’s irresponsible for an American president to negotiate like this, if that is in fact what he is doing, and as VP Harris warned America, massive tariffs amount to a massive tax increase on average American families.

Kremlin says US-donated ATACMS hit airfield within Russian territory… Ukraine is still in the fight of its life against Putin’s brutal full-scale invasion, and Russia is claiming US-donated ATACMS struck their (legitimate) territory, the latest in a series of fake “red lines” that the Kremlin suggested could lead to nuclear war. Following the election earlier this month, the Biden administration announced, with European powers following suit, that it would allow strikes on military targets within Russian territory using ATACMS. Previously, Ukraine was using only domestically produced drones for these targets, but ATACMS provide significantly more payload. Kiev, notoriously tight-lipped, has not confirmed the use of ATACMS as reported by the Kremlin.

RFK Jr’s past abortion rights support has Trumpworld swirling… Republican U.S. Senators are expressing concern about RFK Jr… not because of his bonkers views on vaccines or anything else… because of his once mainstream views on abortion rights. CNN quotes Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) who said he would raise the matter at RFK Jr’s committee confirmation hearing, and an unnamed anti-choice national leader who expressed concern over the first mainstream view attributed to RFK Jr. in quite some time.

Holy Cow! Wisc. women justices were not having it with 1849 abortion ban… Yes, this is a story from earlier this month, but when Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) posted the video to Instagram yesterday, we saw it for the first time. There’s also a Thanksgiving angle, because here’s something to be thankful for: Wisconsin Democrats. Their incredible victories down-ballot and in special elections are all but certain to save abortion rights in the state. Here’s what Justice Jill Karofsky, one of four Dem-affiliated women on the court, had to say about the 1849 (yes, 1849!) ban: “...I fear that what you are asking this court to do is to sign the death warrants of women and children and pregnant people in this state, because under your interpretation they could all be denied life-saving medical care while the medical professionals who are charged with taking care of them are forced to sit idly by…”

Today’s Buzz

‘Dune: Prophecy’ series on HBO is awesome–and women are in charge… The “Dune” movie prequel series on HBO premiered this month, and with only two episodes out, it’s safe to say it’s an instant hit. The Dune universe showcases how women view and yield power, as NPR highlighted. Even if you haven’t seen the Dune movies, this one is worth a watch.

Just one more edition of Today’s American News before Turkey Day! Travel safely if you are hitting the road or catching a flight. We’ll be back tomorrow with more American politics and entertainment!
