Since the far-right Israeli government began its genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza back in October, at least 34,000 people have been killed, more than 78,00 have been injured, and over 1 million have been displaced.
Throughout this military aggression, Israel told Palestinians to flee south to Rafah. Now, this city of more than 1.4 million refugees is being told to evacuate, but there is nowhere left to go: about 70% of homes in Gaza have been destroyed, and northern Gaza is experiencing a full-blown famine. For those who still have homes left standing in the north, Israel is telling them they are not permitted to return.
So, where are over 1.4 million people — including 600,000 children — supposed to go to survive?
The invasion of Rafah has already begun, with Israel dropping bombs and starting its ground invasion of Gaza yesterday evening while many Americans were once again distracted watching wealthy extravagance on display at the Met Gala. The invasion began after Israel rejected a proposed ceasefire and release of hostages.
This is a genocide funded by our taxpayer dollars, authorized by our President and Congress. President Biden claimed to draw a red line if Netanyahu invaded Rafah, but has yet to do anything to stop this.
We will not sit idly by while our tax dollars are used to carry out genocide and ethnic cleansing. Biden must take action NOW to save lives and stop our government’s complicity in this horrific violence against innocent people.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
