PLEASE SUPPORT THE USPS!
SERVICES PROVIDED BY USPS CAN BE EXPANDED TO PROVIDE SERVICE TO
RURAL & URBAN COMMUNITIES!
WE CAN DO BETTER!
More and more communities are reporting major delays in mail delivery as Louis DeJoy's 10-year plan to shrink the U.S. Postal Service continues to move forward.1
DeJoy's plan includes shutting down as many as 400 sorting and delivery facilities nationwide.2 Currently, 59 locations across 35 states are facing the ax, and if these cuts aren't stopped, three entire states would be left with no mail-sorting facilities whatsoever, forcing even local mail to travel hundreds of miles for sorting.3
Louis DeJoy is one of the few remaining high-ranking Donald Trump appointees who still hasn't been removed. We need to turn up the pressure to get rid of DeJoy now, before he can do any further damage.
Louis DeJoy is a Republican megadonor who was picked to run the U.S. Postal Service by Donald Trump.
Since taking over as postmaster general, he has raised rates five times, slowed delivery, and cut operations at more than 200 locations. Many of his worst ideas have been enacted with little to no public comment.4
However, unlike cabinet secretaries and many other agency heads, the postmaster general can't be directly fired by the president. Only the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service can do that.
But in February, two seats came open on the Board of Governors, and President Biden's replacement picks could provide the votes we need to oust DeJoy.5
Last week, Bernie Sanders and 20 other U.S. senators called out DeJoy for the mail-processing center shutdowns currently being considered, pointing out that Wyoming, Vermont, and New Hampshire are set to lose all outgoing mail-processing capacity. Meanwhile, Senator Sanders points out that consolidations in Colorado, Illinois, Oregon, Nevada, and New Hampshire would cause significant delays by forcing mail to be moved hundreds of miles for sorting.6
Enough is enough. It's long past time for the Postal Service Board of Governors to fire DeJoy and save the post office. With two immediate openings on the panel, now is the time for us to turn up the pressure.
With gratitude for all that you do,
The team at Demand Progress Action
