Cowardly Republicans in the Texas Senate just acquitted Ken Paxton on all 16 articles of impeachment.
After hearing eight days of witness testimony and reviewing thousands of pages of evidence that prove Ken Paxton hijacked the Attorney General’s Office to enrich himself and his campaign donors, the Texas Senate let him walk scot-free.
Our corrupt leaders have turned Texas into a failed state and an authoritarian regime.
Texas Republicans had a chance to hold accountable one of the most corrupt public officials to ever hold office in Texas. Instead, they did the bidding of the billionaires and pro-Paxton PACs who donated millions to their campaigns to keep Paxton in office so he could continue serving their interests over the interests of Texans.
Here’s how one of the witnesses in the Senate trial — a former lawyer in Paxton’s office — described the Attorney General’s self-serving corruption and what was at stake in this vote:
“The Office of the Attorney General of the State of Texas has become Mr. Paxton’s law firm, and he is the firm’s only client. He directs it to serve himself, not the people of Texas. If you vote to condone that, then high office will simply be the most profitable option for any self-serving crook and it won’t even have to be hidden.”
Texas Republicans think corruption and authoritarianism can win out in Texas. It’s on us to prove them wrong.
Pitch in now to help fire our corrupt, cowardly politicians and replace them with leaders who will stand up for our democracy, uphold the rule of law, and serve the interests of all Texans, not just the wealthy few.
The only way to overcome this level of corruption and abuse of power is to do the hard work necessary to organize, register, and mobilize the hundreds of thousands of voters we need to finally bring change in this state.
We can’t afford to give up on this effort. Thank you for being a part of this fight and keeping the faith to move forward.
