Last night, Memphis authorities released video of five police officers beating Tyre Nichols to death after a traffic stop. By all accounts, the video is as horrific as it sounds. The video can be found in this AP article, but we, at atAdvocacy, have decided not to watch. We have shed tears for Tyre and his family. We know that Tyre is far from the first Black man to be murdered by police in America, and we are devastated by the undeniable fact that he will not be the last. We do not need to watch cops brutally beat anyone to know that the state of policing in America is an abomination that must be addressed urgently and comprehensively. Today, we will honor Tyre by remembering not how he died but how he lived — a father, a husband, a 29 year-old baby brother, a hugger who loved his mom, a 49ers fan with a bright smile. We will honor Tyre by ensuring he is not forgotten and by working to end the disgrace of police brutality in America.
