Sign the Petition: Tell President Biden the DHS IG Must Go
Earlier this year, POGO released an investigation detailing shocking findings of rampant sexual misconduct, protection of domestic abusers, and concerning inaction from leadership at the Department of Homeland Security. Our investigation revealed that more than 1 in 3 DHS law enforcement employees responding to an internal survey said that they’d experienced sexual harassment or misconduct at work. But DHS Inspector General Joseph V. Cuffari, whose job is to bring issues like these to light, informed no one and did nothing about the troubling survey findings for more than a year. What’s worse, his office deleted from a public report the fact that DHS let dozens of officers who they had found engaged in domestic abuse stay in their jobs and keep their government-issued firearms, effectively protecting potential predators in the force. These revelations rightfully brought Cuffari under the critical eye of Congress and the media, but the sole authority to remove the inspector general remains with the president, and he has done nothing about it. We've started a petition to make it clear to President Biden that the time is now for him to remove and replace Cuffari. Biden was elected on the promise of a more accountable government. We must hold him to his word, and we can start by demanding that he remove and replace Inspector General Cuffari with an IG who’s up to the task of overseeing and ensuring accountability at the Department of Homeland Security. Our power is in our numbers. Thank you for being a part of the solution.
