Today’s Action: Tell Congress to do MORE to reduce gun violence!
Recently, US Congress finally passed legislation to address America’s horrific gun violence epidemic, the first such congressional action in nearly thirty years. While the changes made were modest and far from perfect, our country finally took a long-overdue step in the right direction. Incentivizing states to implement red flag laws, providing more funding to support laws already in place, enhancing background checks for those under 21, and investing hundreds of millions of dollars in mental health services are all parts of the new law that will undoubtedly save lives. While these improvements represent a massive achievement for a country diseased by chronic gun violence, we cannot stop there.
Banning assault rifles (weapons specifically designed to kill human beings on battlefields), expanding background checks to include ammunition purchases, mandating proper gun storage and safety protocols and prosecuting failure to comply — these are just some of the steps necessary to truly reduce gun violence in America.
Call (202.224.3121) or email your representatives and demand they bring the Assault Weapons Ban to a vote!
There were 693 mass shootings in the United States in 2021 alone. Excluding suicide, there were 20,726 gun deaths in 2021, as well. Despite months of virtual, online schooling last year, there were still 42 acts of gun violence on K-12 campuses. According to the Washington Post, a child is shot every hour in America. We have had more mass shootings in 2022 so far than there have been days — something's got to give.
How much mass trauma must America experience before our elected officials stop making excuses for weapons of mass death?
Call (202.224.3121) your representatives and remind them that the fight for common-sense gun safety laws can’t stop here!
