Today’s Action: Pass gun safety laws NOW!
A decade after the unspeakable horrors of Sandy Hook, there are still nowhere near enough gun safety laws in place to prevent catastrophic mass shootings in American schools. Last week, an 18-year-old in Uvalde, Texas, armed with a legally purchased assault rifle and 375 rounds of ammunition, walked into Robb Elementary School and murdered 19 children and two teachers. 2,500 instances of school shooting threats have been logged in the K-12 School Shooting Base since just 2018 — how much mass trauma must America experience before our elected officials step up and actually do something?
In the absence of any new, common-sense gun laws, teachers in America have spent the past decade instructing students how to build barricades, run for their lives, and fight back against active shooters — effectively embedding the reality of gun violence into everyday life. Make no mistake, recalcitrant legislators across the country, at every level, have blood on their hands. At the very least, we need a national red-flag law that will allow officials to intervene before any more lives are senselessly lost.
Call (202.224.3121) or email your members of Congress and demand comprehensive, common-sense gun safety laws, including universal background checks, increased age limits, and expanded waiting periods!
There were 693 mass shootings in the United States in 2021 alone. Excluding suicide, there were 20,726 gun deaths in 2021, as well. In total, more than 40,000 gun deaths have occurred just during the Biden presidency. Despite months of virtual, online schooling last year, there were still 42 acts of gun violence on K-12 campuses. According to the Washington Post, a child is shot every hour in America. Despite these startling numbers, an estimated 18.8 million guns were still sold last year, and six states passed permit-free concealed-carry laws. We have had more mass shootings in 2022 so far than there have been days — something's got to give.
Email or call (202.224.3121) your representatives and demand common-sense gun safety laws broadly supported by Americans from both sides of the aisle!
