Today’s Action: Pass the Background Check Expansion Act!

This weekend, four mass shootings across the United States – Austin, Cleveland, Chicago, Savannah – wounded 39 and killed five. One of the wounded is an 18-month-old baby (who is, thank goodness, in non-critical condition).

The Senate is considering several pieces of common sense, popular, and bipartisan gun safety legislation, which may be brought for a vote within the next few weeks. These bills were previously passed by House Democrats under Trump but collected dust on former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s desk.

With Senate Democrats now in the majority, and many Republican voters in favor of life-saving gun safety policies like the Background Check Expansion Act (77% of Republicans support background checks on gun purchases) we’re about to find out just how far the GOP is willing to go to support or ignore their own base.

It’s a good time to make some noise to save lives.

Call or email your Senators – both parties! – and demand common sense gun safety laws, including the Background Check Expansion Act (S.529) and expanded waiting periods on purchases! Tell them to abolish the filibuster if it blocks the passage of these popular bills!

The Background Check Expansion Act passed the House with eight Republicans joining Democrats in favor. Senate Republicans will finally be forced to commit to one side or the other – and Senate Democrats may find out just how much the GOP’s filibuster blocks the popular legislation that the vast majority of Americans want to see passed.

This ceaselessly heartbreaking and infuriating topic is solvable. We cannot and must not stop speaking out until our elected leaders listen to our demands, cries, and pleas to end gun violence.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand their support for the Background Check Expansion Act, expanded waiting periods on purchases, and other common sense gun safety laws. Tell Democrats they must pass these laws, even if it takes overturning the filibuster.
