Today’s Action: Take action for veterans this Memorial Day

The country is opening back up again, thanks to the rising numbers of vaccinations – and just in time for a long Memorial Day weekend. But before you head out to your plans for the day (and we hope they are safe plans, since the pandemic ain’t over yet, folks), please spend five minutes taking an important action for the veterans among us, in honor of those no longer with us.

In both Iraq and Afghanistan, the US military burned its trash in open air pits, everything from plastic bottles and electronics to tires, batteries, and paint cans. Veterans serving near these burn pits were exposed to the resulting noxious fumes and smoke. Tens of thousands (or more) veterans are sick with rare or unrecognized diseases, others have been diagnosed with cancer, and many believe it’s due to working near these burn pits.

But without formal recognition of this major health hazard, these veterans aren’t able to receive proper medical treatment or disability from the VA.

Call (leave a voicemail today) or email your Members of Congress this Memorial Day and urge them to co-sponsor the Veterans Burn Pits Exposure Recognition Act of 2021. If they have already co-sponsored, thank them!

The Veterans Burn Pits Exposure Recognition Act would formally recognize that these hazardous open-air burn pits cause exposure to airborne toxins, thereby removing the burden of proof from the affected veteran.

This bipartisan bill has the support of progressives and Republicans alike. Passing it is an important step for supporting those veterans neglected in their battle to receive proper health care as a consequence of military service.

Email or call (leave a voicemail) your Members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor the Veterans Burn Pits Exposure Recognition Act of 2021

PS — Please don't forget to sign the petition to charge Rudy Giuliani for conspiring with Russia, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
