The Republican attacks on free speech are getting worse. More states are proposing draconian restrictions on protestors, and in some cases, passing bills that would effectively encourage violence against them. Here are a few of the most recent developments: - Indiana -- Legislators are considering a bill that would bar anyone convicted of unlawful assembly from holding state employment, including elected office.
- Minnesota -- A new proposal would prohibit those convicted of unlawful protesting from receiving student loans, unemployment benefits, or housing assistance.
- Iowa and Oklahoma -- Both states have passed laws that grant immunity to drivers whose vehicles strike and injure protesters in public streets.
That last point is not a misprint: Drivers who plow into protestors, like the one who killed Heather Heyer at the rally against white supremecists in Charlottesville, could avoid any repercussions under these new laws in Iowa and Oklahoma. All of this is in addition to the headline-grabbing legislation that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law recently that he called “the strongest anti-looting, anti-rioting, pro-law-enforcement piece of legislation in the country.” The right to protest is guaranteed under the Constitution. These laws are nothing less than a direct assault on the foundation of our country. We need to elect Democrats to public office at every level to repeal the anti-protest laws that have passed and to staunchly oppose any new legislation that is proposed. Can you chip in $10 right now to help us elect progressive Democrats up and down the ballot in 2022?
The right to free speech is a precious freedom afforded to us in this country. Thank you for joining us in the struggle to defend it. Together, we can't lose. Progressive Majority |
