Yesterday Michael Thompson got the keys to a new home, more than 25 years after he was first arrested for selling weed in Michigan. Thousands of us spoke up to get him free, and then chipped in to make sure he had a new beginning after release.
Michael had decades of his life stolen. Recreational weed is not only legal in Michigan now, but it is a massive, multi-million dollar industry. No one should have to go through what Michael endured, EVER.
Every single day, more people – and especially Black people – are given sentences just like Michael’s by prosecutors bent on maintaining the status quo, instead of compassion, decarceration, or justice.
We want to replace those prosecutors. All of them.
That’s what Real Justice does: we work at the grassroots level to defeat bad prosecutors, and replace them with people who will fight for justice. And we won’t stop until they’re in every city and county nationwide.
Where Real Justice prosecutors have won, fewer people are being locked up, more people are coming out of them to rebuild their lives. Here’s where we ask for your help.
Prisons do not allow people to heal. They are inhumane, period. This year, we want to elect even more people who will work to empty them, not fill them up.
That way, families all over the country can receive good news like Michael’s got this year.
