We won this time -- but the GOP is about to redraw the map

FiveThirtyEight: “Every 10 years, after the census, congressional and state legislature districts are redrawn to account for population changes. This gives whoever is drawing the maps the power to maximize the number of districts that favor their party -- a tactic known as gerrymandering. And as we wrote last month, the 2020 election represented the last chance for voters to weigh in on who would draw those maps.”

Guess what the voters decided this election?

Republicans will redistrict 43% of the House of Representatives.

Democrats will redistrict 17%.

The GOP has shown that they love gerrymandering -- and why wouldn’t they? Twisting the rules is the only way a party that doesn’t represent the majority of the American people can win elections. And unfortunately, per FiveThirtyEight, “It now looks as if we’re headed for another 10 years of Republican-favoring maps.”

We’ve shown that we can do a lot, even if the maps are stacked against us. If we keep our eyes on their agenda, keep fighting for progressive legislation at every turn, and stay engaged through the next four years, we still have a shot at accomplishing a ton under President Joe Biden. Health care, human rights, safeguarding the future of our climate -- it’s all within our reach.

But Democratic donors have stopped giving because they’re satisfied with defeating Donald Trump. We’re happy he’s on his way out, too -- but Republican gerrymandering could ensure that his supporters are all but guaranteed any seat they run for in the future.

And we’re not doing a thing to stop them.

We’d like to change that! We’d like to do everything we can to oppose gerrymandering in the first place, and then mount a swift and powerful counteroffensive on a legislative and an electoral level. We have the drive. We have the potential. We just need the funds.

It’s why we’re asking for them so plainly now. Would you chip in now to push back against the incoming GOP redistricting and the disastrous effects it will have on our nation?

We cannot thank you enough for stepping up.
