CHARLES BOOKER: Student loan debt is a racial justice issue

Booker for the People

Today, student debt is a $1.7 trillion crisis. Nearly 45 million Americans — that’s one in every five — carry student debt. This burden exacerbates economic inequality, prevents wealth building, and stifles the dreams of millions of Americans.

Student debt cancellation would not only greatly contribute to an equitable economic recovery from COVID-19, but it would jumpstart our economy and help close the racial wealth gap.

That’s why Booker for the People has joined Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and others in calling on President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to cancel student loan debt. Will you join us by adding your name today?

Roughly one-sixth of the U.S. population over the age of 18 currently carry a federal student loan. Removing this burden would be an immediate and great stimulant for our economy.

Cancelling student debt is also a racial justice issue. Black borrowers on average owe more in student loan debt than white borrowers — holding them back from building intergenerational wealth and exacerbating the existing racial wealth gap.

Add your name today to urge President-elect Joe Biden to prioritize the economic stability of everyday Americans by cancelling student loan debt.

Thank you for taking action today,

Charles
