The United Cape Patriots, a local grass-roots conservative group, is sponsoring a “Reopen Cape Cod” rally from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Bourne Rotary.
“This is a nonpartisan event to let our elected officials know we are ready to return to work based on the steep decline in Barnstable County new (COVID-19) cases and the economic impact our most vulnerable low-income neighbors are experiencing,” the group’s founder, Adam Lange of Brewster, said.
Safety recommendations for outdoor social distancing will be adhered to, according to Lange, and participants are encouraged to bring American flags and political signs.
Demonstrations calling on state officials to end shutdowns prompted by the coronavirus pandemic have been held in several states, with more planned. President Donald Trump indicated his support for the rallies in a series of tweets Friday. Lange is an ardent Trump supporter.
Public health officials have said the restrictions are needed to contain the virus.
