Trump says his administration is demanding the University of Pennsylvania turn over the names of all Jewish faculty in order to combat antisemitism. But this is the same president who said he would keep us out of war in the Middle East.

Fortunately UPenn is refusing to comply with the federal judge who upheld the administration’s demand, and the University is appealing the order. But why does the very notion of the government compiling a list of Jewish people send shivers up our spines? The answer is obvious: history has seen this before.

Sign on now to tell the presidents of every major university to stand with UPenn and refuse to provide the names of any Jewish faculty, staff, or students to the Trump administration -- or any administration that asks!

In Nazi Germany, it started with simple paperwork. In 1938, the Nazis required that all passports held by Jews had to be marked with a large red letter “J.” If the name was not recognizably Jewish, men had to add the name “Israel” and women the name “Sara” on all official documents. This made it more difficult for Jews to flee the country.

The requirement to wear a yellow star came in occupied Poland in 1939, and was extended to all Jewish people in the German Reich older than six years old in 1941. This badge was made of cloth, with the word “Jude” (Jew) on it, and was required to be sewn onto the left chest of the outer garment. It was illegal to wear it with a safety pin or cover it with a bag.

Next, Jewish people were segregated in their own neighborhoods as their neighbors feared being labeled as “Jew-friendly.” Jews could only shop during certain hours and were not allowed on public buses or into parks, theatres, and cafes. It was not far from there to the death camps.

So why, exactly, is the MAGA party that has flirted with antisemites Nick Fuentes, Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones demanding that UPenn turn over its paperwork identifying Jews? The question is a fair one, and significant.

Tell all U.S. college and university presidents to stand firm with UPenn in its refusal of the Trump administration’s insistence on these documents.
