Donald Trump's The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman, Brandon Carr, is soliciting public comments as to whether or not ABC's The View is a "bona fide news interview program." Supposedly, this is being done in order to help the FCC determine, as Ars Technica puts it, "whether The View qualifies for the bona fide news exemption to the equal-time rule, which requires equal time for opposing political candidates on non-news programming " However, we all know what this is really about. The Trump administration is attempting to clamp down on The View in the wake of an interview it conducted with Texas Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico back in February. The Trump administration opened an investigation into The View after that interview not to try and enforce the equal time rule, but instead to try and keep Democratic candidates in key congressional races off the air as much as possible. Additionally, the FCC's investigation into The View is part and parcel of the Trump administration's general assault against any news organization Donald Trump doesn't like, and more specifically against the Walt Disney Company (which owns ABC), as talk show host Jimmy Kimmel appears on ABC stations. I have created this petition to help you submit a comment to the FCC during this public comment period, which began on May 7 and runs through June 22. I will submit this petition to the FCC, along with your name (but not with your email) electronically on Monday,. June 22. SIGN THE PETITION The petition reads: The the FCC: Your investigation into The View is a transparent attempt to weaponize the federal government against news programming which Donald Trump does not like. It has no chance of standing up in court, and is an utter waste of taxpayer dollars. You should immediately rule that The View did nothing wrong by interviewing James Talarico, and start defending freedom of the press instead of trying to clamp down on it.
