AG Campbell fights to protect consumers

Andrea Campbell for Attorney General

"A long-awaited lawsuit accuses the internet giant of protecting an online retail monopoly."
— The Daily Podcast, New York Times, 10/2/2023

“Amazon has become dominant as an online superstore. But — out of view from the average person, family, or business — Amazon has used that dominance to inflate prices, coerce third-party sellers, and stifle competition.” - Attorney General Andrea Campbell

Friends,

Last week, Attorney General Andrea Campbell announced that her office joined the Federal Trade Commission and a bi-partisan coalition of 16 state attorney generals in suing Amazon.com, Inc., alleging that Amazon uses a set of anticompetitive and unfair strategies that harm consumers.

The lawsuit alleges that Amazon has…

  • Drastically increased fees and commissions imposed on sellers to use Amazon’s platforms and features, while punishing sellers for charging less anywhere else on the internet — preventing competition that would prevent their exorbitant fees, effectively charging us all an Amazon tax, and shielding it all from public view;
  • Buried sellers, who in the past have offered lower priced goods on other websites, so far down in Amazon’s search results that they become effectively invisible to consumers.
  • Coercing sellers to use Amazon fulfillment services at inflated prices, which are then passed along to consumers.

Andrea understands that these tactics limit competition and drive up prices for consumers across Massachusetts.

She knows that sellers shouldn’t be struggling to stay in business because they are paying 50% of their total revenues to Amazon – and that consumers should be able to buy competitively-priced, quality goods across the internet.

That’s why Andrea is taking on Amazon - and she will never hesitate to take on monopolists that use unfair practices to maintain power. If the lawsuit is effective, Amazon would be prohibited from engaging in its unlawful conduct and fair competition in the online marketplace would be restored.
