Florida Republican Sen. Blaise Ingoglia is backing a new bill in Florida that he calls the “Ultimate Cancel Act,” using a clownishly tenuous justification to ban the Florida Democratic Party entirely. A performative and tiresome attempt to play "gotcha!" with Democratic criticisms of the Florida GOP's openly racist and transphobic legislation, the bill not only highlights how deeply unseriously the GOP takes the job of governance but also exposes the authoritarian fascism that beats in the heart of MAGA conservatism.

Montana Republicans have introduced a truly unhinged bill that would ban donors who have received the life-saving COVID-19 vaccination from donating blood, a deranged move that would reportedly "decimate" the state's blood supply by as much as 80%. The pace at which Republican legislatures are attempting to legislate their deranged conspiracy theories into law without any regard to the very real and very serious real-world consequences is incredibly alarming and a sharp reminder of why contesting every race at every level is more important than ever.

Supreme Court's conservative justices signal skepticism of Biden's loan forgiveness plan
The conservative extremists on the Supreme Court — with the surprising exception of Amy Coney Barrett — made it clear they see their position as a free veto on any and all liberal policy, no matter the actual arguments involved. In this case, the conservative justices pretended to worry about whether or not Biden was sidestepping congressional authority, while the liberal justices pointed out that the idea that this billionaire-sponsored lawsuit would hurt a single student loan company in Missouri doesn't check out, since the company cited in the suit didn't even file it. It is breathtaking to see Brett Kavanaugh, who had hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt paid for by his parents, on the cusp of sentencing the hard-working indebted students of America to indentured servitude for the crime of pursuing the American dream, but that's "conservatism" for ya.

The widow of the late NBA superstar will receive $29 million from the city of Los Angeles after cops photographed and then shared gruesome photographs of the helicopter crash that killed nine people, including horrific close-up images of the dead. While the Bryant family certainly deserves every penny of the settlement, this incident must be highlighted for what it is: taxpayers once again being forced to pick up the tab for a disgusting display of abuse on the part of the cops whose salaries they pay.

The Republican-controlled Florida Legislature has proposed a new gleefully fascist bill that would make it illegal to approach a police officer at a scene after being warned to stay away — giving dirty cops even more power to abuse.
Matt Gaetz publicly humiliated as he's caught citing Chinese media in a push to stop Ukraine aid
Defense Under Secretary Colin Kahl pointed out during a House hearing that Matt Gaetz was quoting from state-sponsored Chinese media during questioning on whether or not American aid was being delivered to the far-right extremist "Azov Battalion" in Ukraine. Gaetz denied it but then admitted: "Yeah, it might be. Yeah." It appears that the GOP's hysterical anti-China rhetoric is just like all their other "principles" — immediately discarded and forgotten whenever it's politically expedient to do so.
Lori Lightfoot becomes the first Chicago mayor in 40 years to lose re-election
The embattled mayor failed to meaningfully address a rise in crime and soiled her reputation with her belligerent and defensive reactions to her "haters," leading to Lightfoot failing to make the top-two candidates in a nine-person race. Former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas and Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson will face each other in the April run-off.

Today’s Action: Tell the Atlanta City Council to stop the development of Cop City!
A massive police training center set to be built in Atlanta is threatening 381 acres of publicly owned forest. Brave environmental protesters have been setting up camp with tents in the trees for months, risking arrest and prosecution in defense of green space and common sense. One protester, 26-year-old Tortuguita, was already shot 13 times by police on Jan. 18, in what other activists are calling a state-sanctioned murder. There is zero reason that a privately owned, corporate-funded tactical police training ground is important enough to bulldoze publicly owned forest land… let alone kill people over. Oh, did we mention the price of the project? Nearly $90 million.
With widespread calls for decreased police funding and increased climate action, the proposal to raze forest land for such a facility is grossly out of touch. There are plenty of initiatives that officials in Atlanta could be working on for the betterment of their residents — but instead, constituents’ voices have been ignored in favor of even more deference to law enforcement. Ongoing protests from residents in the area have made it clear that this is NOT what the community wants. One recent survey showed 98% of residents OPPOSE the building of Cop City. How long will it take until Atlanta council members wake up and listen to the actual people they were elected to serve?
Call the Atlanta City Council office at 404-330-6030 or email an Atlanta City Council member and demand they revoke the Cop City permit!
