South Coast Rail Phase 1 and Town of Middleborough Updates
The long hot days of August are well upon us and we hope you are enjoying some time off, safely.
We do want to update you on events as South Coast Rail continues to move forward.
The contractor continues to prepare the construction schedule for the Fall River Secondary, the first major contract. The work is anticipated to begin this fall (see the press release and the Spring 2020 fact sheet for more information). Schedule approval, compliance with COVID-19 requirements, and mobilization of crews and equipment are under discussion.
Bids on the next contract, which includes the New Bedford Main Line, the Middleborough Secondary, and the signal system for the entire Phase 1 corridor, are due this week. The South Coast Rail team will review and present them to the MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board at the end of August. By late this year, both major efforts will be underway.
Construction continues on four railroad bridge replacements as well as demolition of properties in the right-of-way. See the Construction page for more information.
Middleborough Community Meetings Postponed
The Virtual Middleborough Community Meeting and follow-up Q+A workshop, originally scheduled for August 20 and August 27, are postponed.
The Town of Middleborough was awaiting supporting documentation for an engineering review of elements of South Coast Rail and it was not ready in time for review and discussion. Due to the comprehensive nature of the reports, officials want to take more time to review and ask questions within the Town. We hope to announce new dates as soon as possible, likely in early fall.
South Coast Rail will be hosting similar virtual community meetings throughout the region beginning this fall.

Thank you for your continued interest in South Coast Rail,

Director of Community Engagement

The South Coast Rail project will restore commuter rail service between Boston and southeastern Massachusetts. Taunton, Fall River and New Bedford are the only major cities within 50 miles of Boston that do not currently have commuter rail access to Boston. South Coast Rail will reconnect this region to jobs and generate economic development. Phase 1 construction is beginning in 2020 and will restore service to the region by the end of 2023.
