October 2026 SELC in Brief

News   Second largest gas plant in the U.S. threatens rural Virginia to serve data centers   Central Virginia residents are fighting another massive polluting project designed to meet the growing energy demands of data centers. Despite local opposition, Cumberland County leaders have chosen to recommend approval of the proposed gas plant.   Dominion Energy's gas project is in direct conflict with the county's comprehensive plan and a report released over the summer shows how exposure to pollution from the gas plant in a sparsely populated rural area is expected to result in the following impacts every year: 3–7 premature deaths, 7 new cases of asthma, 2 acute heart attacks, and Other cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses, Hospital admissions, and Emergency room visits.  As the local community demands transparency and accountability, they're making it crystal clear that powerful interests shouldn't rank above their health and safety.   Read the Story
