While DHS was publicly denying that a hunger strike was happening at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in California, GEO Group was filing charges against the people organizing it. |
They monitored the platform detainees use to contact the outside world, and identified a message from someone claiming responsibility for arranging the strike. It's worth asking what legal authority GEO Group has, as a private corporation, to bring charges of any kind against people in its custody – let alone what these charges mean. What we can say with confidence is that a private prison company just used its surveillance of detainee communications to identify an organizer and file paperwork designed to punish them for the act of demanding basic dignity. ResistMap documents incidents like these to close the gap between what these companies say publicly and what their own paperwork shows. Chip in to keep that work funded. Here is the thing about GEO's authority to bring these charges. Nobody actually knows what it means in practice. They are a private company operating under a federal contract and the disciplinary system they run inside these facilities has almost no public oversight. That opacity is by design. The harder it is to understand what is happening inside, the harder it is for anyone on the outside to challenge it. Which is exactly why we file the records requests. It’s why we log the incident reports when they surface and build a timeline of what these companies are actually doing versus what they are telling the government they are doing. GEO Group has been documented using forced labor schemes, benefitting from no-bid contracts, and obfuscating their role in the growing number of detention deaths under this administration. This is just the latest chapter. They're counting on the fog. We are in the business of clearing it. Chip in today to keep that archive growing. v/r, David Dodds Director, National Watch Center Arsenal PAC |
