Eighty years ago today, tens of thousands of Americans landed on beaches in Normandy to fight fascism abroad and protect democracy at home. Those Americans were literally decimated – one out of every ten were either killed or wounded. But without their courage and determination, without their willingness to sacrifice even their own lives, Europe would not be free. The concentration camps would not have been liberated. The Nazis would not have been defeated. We would not be here today. And yet today as we honor their memory, we have a Republican nominee for President who promises to revive the fascism of 1940s Germany right here in the U.S.; a candidate who promises to be a dictator on day one; who has shown us he will incite violence to stop the peaceful transfer of power; and who says immigrants are poisoning the blood of our country, language that could be lifted out of Mein Kampf, out of the mouth of Adolf Hitler. Here in Texas, we have a junior senator who encourages insurrection when his party loses power and seeks to undermine our legal system when his cult leader is found guilty. And our state’s Republican party officially refuses to repudiate neo-Nazis and has promised to destroy our very democracy by rejecting the idea that the winner of the popular vote should be the winner of the election. What do we do to honor those who’ve served us? And how do we fight back against those who would dishonor the sacrifices of those who made our democracy possible? At Powered by People, we are registering Texans to vote; personally staying in touch with them throughout the election; doing what we can, with what we have, where we are. It’s how we make sure that we do not squander the inheritance won for us by the generations that preceded ours – that we do not meanly lose what Lincoln called “the last, best hope” of earth. Thank you for keeping the faith, honoring our country and fighting back when it’s under attack. Onward, Beto |
