Trump’s economy is crap
Hello and welcome back to another edition of Today’s American News, your source for news and analysis on the circus that is American politics and entertainment. Well, it’s Friday, folks. Between Trump’s Lies of the Union and his “very stable genius” approach to the world, this was a wild week.
Trump’s second-term economic record already looks like a big failure… During his first term in the White House, Trump became the first president since Herbert Hoover to lose overall American jobs during his term. Forecasts aren’t much better for the failed businessman this time around. Thanks to Trump’s self-inflicted tariff wounds, Forbes noted the “brutal start to March” in which stocks saw their worst week in six months “as investors digested a barrage of economic data” and Trump’s “extensive tariffs on the country’s top three trade partners.” ABC News doused the February jobs report in cold water, writing, “employers hired 151,000 workers last month, falling short of expectations of 170,000 jobs added.” And although Trump came in promising to magically fix inflation, CBS News reports economists warn of record prices thanks to his “barrage of tariffs on key U.S. trading partners and ongoing crackdown on immigration” at the expense of consumers.

Hill Democrats have little interest in saving GOP from shutting down the government… Politico reports, “Top House Democrats on Friday bashed the GOP's plan for keeping the government open but stopped short of rallying their party against the bill” even as a potential shutdown looms next week. On multiple occasions Speaker Mike Johnson has only been able to keep the government open thanks to a large number of Democratic votes. Yet with Johnson doing nothing to rein in the chaos and confusion of mass firings across the federal government, Democrats have little motive to bail out Johnson this time around. OUR TAKE: Democrats receive almost ZERO credit from the middle-of-the-road voters or from the media for being the adults in the room. Saving Johnson again will not mobilize our activists to stop more tax breaks for billionaires or to win in next year’s midterm elections. So let’s fight.
Trump tells Cabinet they (not Musk) are in charge of personnel… Did Trump just attempt to rein in Elon?! Or did he simply put into motion infighting and backstabbing at the highest levels of his administration? According to NBC News, yesterday Trump “instructed his Cabinet to work with Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency but clarified that Cabinet members should be the ones making staffing decisions.” Good to know, thought the thousands of federal workers axed by Musk’s DOGE-sh*t. Trump posted on Truth Social the old adage about using a scalpel instead of hatchet, a painfully disingenuous 11th-hour contrast to Elon Musk’s literal chainsaw. Yet “Elon Musk tells Republican lawmakers he’s not to blame for federal firings,” read a headline from the Associated Press today. LOL.

Trump only loves free speech when no one is talking about civilian deaths… NPR writes the Trump Administration “canceled $400 million in federal grants and contracts to Columbia University over what it described as the school's failure to police antisemitism on campus.” College and university communities expressed outrage over seemingly endless deaths of civilians, journalists, aid distributors, and medical workers in Gaza. These institutions are un-American, Trump says, as opposed to what he must believe are very, very, pro-American H*tler salutes, jokes about the Holocaust, and white supremacists dog whistles. If Trump cared one bit about fighting antisemitism, he would find a working Hyperloop and send Elon Musk anywhere but the White House. Instead, he attacks intelligent young people pursuing their dreams just because they happen to be progressive. All of this hypocrisy, by the way, comes from the guy who operated a fake and illegal university named after himself.

Dolly Parton dedicates song to beloved husband four days after his passing… Singer-songwriter and all-around good human Dolly Parton lost the love of her life this week. Her late husband, Carl Dean, passed away on Monday at the age of 82. Few people could have summoned the strength, focus, and vision to spend the week as she did, namely, honoring Carl through an original song. The number, If You Hadn’t Been There, has lyrics that reflect the beauty of 60 years of love.
Some lyrics: I wouldn't be here / If you hadn't been there / Holding my hand / Showing you care… You made me drеam / More than I dared / And I wouldn't be hеre / If you hadn't been there.
Dolly, we love you, we are thinking of you, and we are blessed as a society to have you.
