Wildlife SOS: A blind elephant playing cricket?

Suzy

For almost 6 decades, Suzy performed in a circus. Her ‘trick’ was to play cricket. She’d tightly grip the bat with her trunk and swing aimlessly as balls were thrown at her face. Although we see all elephants performing in circuses as mistreatment, this act seemed unusually cruel considering the fact that she was blind.

More than a quarter of the elephants at our rescue centres are vision-impaired due to brutal treatment from their previous owners. Like Suzy, their blindness was likely caused by malnutrition, untreated infections, or sometimes their eyes were even intentionally punctured to make them more compliant. These blind elephants need specialised care such as their own dedicated caregiver, special diets, and frequent eye care treatments to prevent infection.

Suzy's caregiver Baburam leads the blind elephant on long walks every evening. The two share an extremely close bond.

This week we need to inspire 74 (Suzy’s age) people to make a monthly pledge to adopt an elephant like Suzy. By making a monthly pledge, you will become an adopter of our blind elephant herd. We will then send you regular updates and photos of how she and the other visually impaired elephants are doing.

On behalf of Suzy, we want to show you our gratitude. If you make a kind pledge of any amount you’ll receive our Elephant Yearbook Keepsake. Pledge a generous gift of $10 or more we'll also send you special edition elephant knit beanie!

For more than 60 years, blind Suzy was paraded around a circus tent and forced to perform "tricks" for a raucous crowd for several shows a day.
