Daily Dose of Democracy:
Kevin McCarthy caves on far-right demand as quest for speakership comes down to the wire
In a groveling “Dear Colleague” letter to increasingly restless Republicans, McCarthy made his case for the speakership and offered additional concessions to weaken the post in an attempt to appease extremists in the GOP caucus, nine of whom immediately — and unsurprisingly — declared the latest move insufficient.

Jan. 6 "disqualifies" Trump from GOP presidential nomination, Asa Hutchinson says
In what should be a forgone conclusion and not remotely newsworthy, a sitting Republican governor appeared on national television and declared Donald Trump disqualified for the presidency for inciting a deadly insurrection on the US Capitol two years ago. Arkansas' Asa Hutchinson, who himself has eyes on the White House, stated the painfully obvious during a live interview on ABC "This Week."
Will Trump be indicted in 2023?
No Lie with Brian Tyler Cohen: Wow.
Floundering Trump says GOP's midterm election failure "wasn't my fault"
The disgraced ex-president kicked off 2023 in familiar fashion, airing grievances about the 2022 midterm elections, arguing he wasn’t to blame for the GOP’s weaker-than-expected showing, despite his stable of laughably awful, hand-picked candidates losing a string of consequential — and winnable — races.

Bill to fight predatory prison phone call costs heads to President Biden's desk
The Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act of 2022, which was approved by Congress last month, is a major victory for the Federal Communications Commission in its yearslong fight to reduce and cap the predatory rates private companies charge incarcerated people for phone calls.

Ukraine claims hundreds of Russians killed by missile attack
As Vladimir Putin's brutal invasion of Ukraine drags on into a second calendar year, the carnage continues unabated. Ukrainian officials say around 400 Russians soldiers stationed in the city of Makiivka in the occupied Donetsk region were killed by a counter missile strike. A senior Russian-backed official in the occupied parts of Donetsk acknowledged the missile strike, which came just minutes after midnight on New Year's Day, but disputed the casualty figures released by Ukraine.
George Santos pressured to resign by retiring GOP congressman over string of lies
Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas said the newly elected Santos should consider resigning for fabricating basically every aspect of his resumé, before pivoting to tired, predictable talk about "second chances" and how the serial liar might go about regaining the trust of his constituents.
Gen Z's 1st congressman mocks GOP as "out of touch" for tweet about his housing woes
25-year-old Rep.-elect Maxwell Alejandro Frost of Florida hasn’t been sworn in to Congress yet, but he’s already doing one of his unofficial duties: clapping back at bad-faith, terribly unclever tweets posted by the Republican Party.
Newly elected Republican state lawmaker steps down following drug bust
Danny Rampey, elected to the Georgia state House in November, was arrested last month after investigators said he stole prescription narcotics at the retirement complex he manages. The 67-year-old Rampey was charged with six counts of obtaining drugs by misrepresentation or theft, six counts of exploiting an elder or disabled adult, five counts of burglary, and one count of drug possession. The Georgia GOP sure knows how to pick 'em.

Here are some other tips to get you started:
- Seek out earth-friendly ingredients and refillable bottles from places like EarthHero and Zero Waste Store. Opt for biodegradable paper towels, compostable parchment paper, and products that can easily be recycled.
- Make your own cleaning products. The Kitchen Chemist’s guide and Wild Minimalist have great zero-waste recipes worth trying!
- Support your local farmers and community-based agriculture. “Food forests” are great ways to help the planet and encourage sustainable eating.
- Create a waste-free bathroom with reusable menstrual products, biodegradable toothbrushes, plastic free soaps and shampoos, and non-toxic deodorant.
The average American tosses out almost five pounds of trash every day. That’s three pounds more than the global average and amounts to a whopping 268 million tons annually for our nation as a whole. If every person reading this newsletter makes even modest changes, it could make a huge difference.
The past few years have produced severe, record-breaking weather events that are only getting worse. Unprecedented destruction from tornadoes, wildfires, and flooding have displaced hundreds of thousands of working families — all while corporations and beholden legislators continue punting on existential threats to our environment. Let’s make 2023 different.
We can’t wait around for those in power to take the first step. Do your part to create a healthier planet today!
