SF Examiner: Prop H. is a threat to San Francisco criminal justice reform

Amie Fishman, a public health worker who has lived in our city for over 20 years, published a powerful op-ed in the SF Examiner this week encouraging San Franciscans to vote no on the recall, otherwise known as Prop. H, on election day next Tuesday.

Amie, who was the victim of an assault in 2019, argues that mass incarceration is not the answer to our city's problems.

“I don’t believe justice would have been served by long prison sentences. Justice would have looked like people in our city having what they need so they aren’t driven to steal. It would have looked like the people who harmed me understanding the impact of their actions and never assaulting anyone again. It would have looked like not being assaulted in the first place.”

The assault happened before I was elected when harsh crime policies were in place. But those policies did not stop the assault, and they did not bring about justice or healing for Amie.

For example, the DA’s Victim Services division has expanded and reached more people impacted by crime than ever before, even as reported crimes have dropped.

If the recall is successful, it will set San Francisco back to the days when harsh sentencing and over-policing were applauded, with no mind paid to meeting the needs of victims like Annie, or the damage incarceration does to low-income communities — the stolen years, the families torn apart, the toll on physical and mental health, the growing racial wealth gap and the lifelong housing and employment discrimination faced by people after they return home from prison.

I encourage everyone to read Amie’s op-ed and share it with your friends. And if you’re as moved by it as I was, please consider donating $20 or more to help our campaign defeat the recall next Tuesday.
