Right now, a company called Aries Clean Technologies is proposing to build a high-heat gasification facility in Taunton, Massachusetts. Why? To burn the region's sewage sludge.
Stop Taunton from building this facility: Tell the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act Office to oppose Aries' proposal.
Sewage sludge is the semi-solid substance left over from wastewater treatment plants. It includes anything and everything that we flush down our toilets, drains, and storm water systems. So, unsurprisingly, it's full of harmful contaminants. That includes PFAS, or "forever chemicals," which are linked to certain cancers, infertility, developmental delays in infants and children, and suppressed immune systems.
Burning this toxic sludge is anything but clean. Instead, it will create air emissions that not only damage our climate, but that harm our health.
The proposed facility would process 172,000 tons of sewage sludge each year – that's 470 tons a day. This would require 16,790 truck trips a year (46 trips a day). Talk about polluting a community!
Many residents and city leaders have already expressed that they don't want this facility in their community. The people of Taunton know what's best for them. They deserve to live in a healthy, vibrant environment free from harmful pollution, as all people do.
You can help: Urge the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act Office to prevent the burning of dangerous sewage sludge in Taunton.
Thank you for taking action to make Massachusetts a cleaner, safer, and more just state.
