PROVINCETOWN — A blue whale was spotted 13 nautical miles east of Truro by the Center for Coastal Studies Right Whale Aerial Surveillance team Wednesday afternoon.

Blue whales are the largest animal ever known to live, growing up to 100 feet in length and weighing between 76 and 150 tons, according to a statement from the Provincetown center.

The Northwest Atlantic blue whale population is estimated to be between 400 and 600 individuals, the statement says. The whales are most commonly found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Canada.

There are sporadic sightings of the whales off New England, the statement says. When they are seen, however, they are generally in very deep waters, miles offshore.

The most recent sighting of blue whales that the center is aware of was by the New England Aquarium aerial team in February, according to the statement. The team spotted two blue whales about 130 miles offshore.
