NEW POSTER: SIMPLE QUESTION SCOTT BESSENT REFUSED TO ANSWER!

It should have been a simple question. Rep. John Larson (D-CT) asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent a version of it five different ways: is the United States at war — and is that why Americans are paying more at the pump? What he got back was a word swap and a stack of talking points. Here's the context, and it's all on the record. Since February 2026, the U.S. has been militarily involved in a conflict with Iran. Iran shut down the Strait of Hormuz — the route for roughly a fifth of the world's oil — triggering the largest oil supply shock since the 1970s. Oil topped $100 a barrel, gas passed $5 a gallon in parts of the country, and by one estimate the cost to U.S. taxpayers has run past $113 billion. When Larson asked point-blank, "Are we at war?", Bessent reached for softer words — "the conflict has been halted" — and even offered to call the Secretary of War to check. To be fair, a ceasefire was in place, so "halted" isn't false. But Larson's frustration was about candor: when U.S. forces carry out strikes, a member of Congress asking a yes-or-no question deserves a yes or a no. I'll give you both sides here. Bessent made his case: core inflation down half a percent since Trump took office, food prices rising slower than under Biden, the gas spike "temporary," and the White House pushing to cut the gas tax — which Larson said he'd actually work on across the aisle. But Larson's counter was just as real: people in his district aren't "doing cartwheels," and rhetoric doesn't pay the grocery bill, the heating bill, or the gas tank. Two different realities — the spreadsheet and the kitchen table. Watch it and decide which one matches yours. This channel breaks down the hearings the news cycle moves past too fast. Tell Congress: Stop Elon Musk and Donald Trump from Destroying Social Security!

The Labor Force

Because of a dedicated workforce of union employees at the Social Security Administration, Social Security has paid benefits in full and on time for nearly a century.

But Elon Musk and Donald Trump have fired 7,000 of those workers, and announced plans to close dozens of field offices all over the country. And now even Trump’s Commerce Secretary is warning that benefit payments could be missed.

Tweet from @MorePerfectUS: Trump Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick:

We need to Musk-proof the Social Security Administration! That’s why the Labor Force is teaming up with Social Security Works and AFGE Council 220, who represent Field Office workers, on a package of legislation to protect our earned benefits!

Rep. John Larson (D-CT), ranking member of the House Social Security subcommittee, has introduced two new bills designed to protect our Social Security system from Musk and Trump:

  • The Keeping Our Field Offices Open Act will put a moratorium on the closure of Social Security Field Offices for the rest of the Trump Administration

  • The Protecting Americans’ Social Security Data Act will block Elon Musk and his cronies’ access to sensitive beneficiary data and strengthen oversight and civil penalties for any privacy and disclosure violations of Social Security beneficiaries’ personal information

In addition, Larson has introduced a Resolution of Inquiry to compel President Trump to disclose to Congress information about DOGE activity at SSA and any plans to close field offices or cut staff.

Congress must pass all three pieces of legislation immediately!

Tell every member of Congress: Support Rep. John Larson’s legislative package to protect Social Security from Donald Trump and Elon Musk!

In solidarity,

The Labor Force
