Exclusive: Gov. Shapiro Speaks Out on Measles Outbreak

Shapiro joins Dr. Vin Gupta on Meidas Health as Pennsylvania confronts five measles-associated deaths and a growing fight with RFK Jr. over the federal response.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro joined Dr. Vin Gupta on Meidas Health as his state confronts a measles outbreak that has now surpassed a grim milestone: more than 1,000 confirmed cases.

Pennsylvania health officials reported 1,004 confirmed measles cases across 39 counties as of October 5, along with 198 hospitalizations and five measles-associated deaths. Fewer than 1 percent of confirmed cases have been among vaccinated individuals.

“Measles was eliminated. Eliminated back in the year 2000,” Shapiro told Gupta. “And now, 26 years later, we’re dealing with it coming roaring back.”

Gupta recently traveled to Pennsylvania to speak directly with physicians treating measles patients, including people sick enough to require intensive care. Shapiro thanked the doctors and other healthcare workers responding to an illness that many younger clinicians never expected to encounter during their careers.

There is at least one encouraging sign. Shapiro said vaccinations have surged as the outbreak has worsened. Pennsylvania confirms that more than 53,000 MMR doses were administered across the state in September, more than twice the amount administered in a typical month.

“The more people realize just how scary and dangerous the situation is, the more they’re stepping up,” Shapiro said.

The conversation then turned to Shapiro’s escalating dispute with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

“What do I want from the feds?” Shapiro said. “I want someone who’s in charge of public health to actually understand public health, and to actually engage in a way that keeps people healthy and protected.”

Shapiro accused Kennedy of spreading misinformation that discourages vaccination and criticized him for previously suggesting that two Pennsylvania measles-associated deaths might have been “fabricated.”

Shapiro told Gupta he wants Washington to encourage vaccination, acknowledge the suffering in Pennsylvania and cooperate with state officials.

“I want them to work with us, not against us, when it comes to protecting public health,” Shapiro said.

The governor also discussed Pennsylvania’s efforts to preserve vaccine access as federal recommendations and policies change. He said his administration is relying on medical organizations and other expert sources to provide guidance to healthcare professionals and patients.

“We’re going to go as far as we can to show that we believe in science, to protect access to vaccines,” Shapiro said.

For Gupta, who has spoken directly with clinicians treating the outbreak, the central message was simpler: physicians on the ground are confronting a disease that the United States once considered eliminated and are urging patients to rely on trusted medical professionals for guidance.

“They’re the experts,” Shapiro said. “Talk to your clinician and ask them what they think.”
