I’ve always known João had a big heart. ❤️
That was clear as we built a life and a wonderful family together in Western Pennsylvania, and it was clear as he entered public service with our shared conviction that no person should be left behind and no community should be forgotten.
But the last year has really proven that João is the bravest and strongest person I know.
As he overcame a stroke, won a seat in the Senate, and then went public with and got treatment for his struggle with depression, he set an example for millions of people who might also need help.
John has never acted like a traditional politician — so it was never a thought that he would hide his struggle with depression. What’s been the biggest surprise is just how strong an outpouring of support we’ve seen. From Pennsylvanians of every background and political persuasion, to Senators and their staff on both sides of the aisle, to people across the country who see themselves in João’s struggle, those well-wishes have meant the world to our family.
Now this week, João’s on the cover of TIME (I know, I could barely believe it too — and omg, how cute is he 🥰).
In the article, João talks openly and honestly about his journey, and, I could not be more proud. This last year has been a long journey for our family. It may have been a very challenging year for you and your family as well. We were lucky to have the support of our friends, loved ones, and all of Pennsylvania — and we’ve pulled through. We are here rooting for (and fighting for policy that will support) you and yours, too.
“Now I have a duty to pay it forward. Because I’ll be honest with you, I would be scared where I would be right now if I didn’t have the kind of help that I got at Walter Reed. And it’s a shame that those types of resources are not available to everyone. But what is available is that I have a duty to be a champion of that.”
— John Fetterman
João ran to represent Pennsylvania because he has a plan and a purpose to make sure Pennsylvania’s best days are ahead of us — and so are his. That’s what he’s hard at work in the Senate to make happen. That’s in no small part thanks to all of you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
