Political Notes: Canceled county meeting draws challenge

BARNSTABLE — The Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners will not hold its weekly meeting Wednesday because there is “no pressing county business that has to be addressed immediately,” according to Ronald Bergstrom, chairman of the three-member board.
The cancellation raised the ire of Commissioner Ronald Beaty Jr., who had requested the board address county response to alleviate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Cape’s restaurant hotel and travel industry. He also wanted to address the status of county employees working remotely from home and safeguards to prevent potential abuse.
“Does the (Democratic) Chairman of the Barnstable County Commissioners believe that the present economic devastation impacting local Cape Cod businesses and workers is not considered pressing county business? If so, then he is quite mistaken,” Beaty, a Republican, said in a statement issued during the weekend.
“We will not let the county get into politics,” Barnstable County Administrator John “Jack” Yunits Jr. said Monday.
Yunits said there are no contracts that currently need to be approved by the commissioners and many other activities have ground to a screeching halt. He also said that through his conversations with small-business experts, it is premature to discuss potential solutions since it is still unknown what government programs will be available for relief. In the meantime, Yunits said, links to resources and information for small businesses have been posted on the county’s website.
“It’s not business as usual,” Bergstrom said. “We don’t know what is happening with aid to small businesses and it’s Jack’s (Yunits) job to make sure employees are doing their jobs (at home). I stand by my decision. We will get these issues worked through, I just don’t think we would get anywhere by meeting this week.”
For Looney-Tune Bergstrom to think there are no pressing issues tells me he is not doing his job. Mr. Beaty is spot on for calling him out. Nut Job Bergstrom, if you don't want to do your job, resign and we'll find someone who wants to work for the folk who pay your salary!
