Last year, a first-of-its-kind expedition took place in the newly designated Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. It was also one of the biggest dive expeditions ever completed in the Great Lakes.
Using a cutting-edge, remotely operated vehicle and 3-D imaging technology, scientists and maritime archaeologists documented 17 shipwrecks in Lake Ontario NMS preserved by cold freshwater. One of the wrecks revealed was a never-before-seen 19th-century schooner over 600 feet beneath the surface. |

This educational mission was live-broadcast directly from the ship, giving the public a chance to dive into our shared maritime heritage and be among the first to see this 150-year-old marvel. Thousands of viewers — including hundreds of students — were able to experience this historic event in real time.
The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation connects communities with our maritime heritage to tell the untold stories that lie beneath our ocean and Great Lakes. The Foundation provided key scientific and educational support for this expedition, in partnership with NOAA, the Ocean Exploration Cooperative Initiative, and the EPA — highlighting our commitment to sponsoring both key scientific work and educational access.
You, too, can experience this piece of maritime history — watch our latest video to see footage from the livestream and learn more about this incredible expedition.
With gratitude,
