Is Elon Leaving the White House?

3.31.25

Happy Monday, readers! We hope you took some time away from the chaos this weekend and we welcome you back to Today’s American News, your source for news and analysis on the circus that is American politics and entertainment.

Musk says DOGEsh*t duties hurt Tesla but we’re pretty sure it’s the N*zi stuff… Related: Trump hints Musk may leave administration… CBS News reports Musk “acknowledged that his role in the Trump Administration with the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, is weighing on the electric vehicle maker's stock, calling his advisory role ‘a very expensive job.’ Musk's role at DOGE has sparked protests from voters who are opposed to DOGE's activities, including gaining access to sensitive data for millions of Americans and shuttering entire agencies as the billionaire seeks to slash government spending.” Don’t get us wrong, Elon, we hate all the harm you inflict on America… but it’s the N*zi stuff that’s tanking your overvalued and overhyped companies. Politico reports on Trump’s intriguing comments, writing “Elon Musk’s days as a senior White House adviser may be coming to an end — along with his government-slashing Department of Government Efficiency. President Donald Trump hinted Monday that his close ally Musk may have to go back to running his companies full time and that the tumultuous mission of DOGE will have been accomplished after firing tens of thousands of government employees.” ABC News, meanwhile, reports the SEC is moving forward with a $150M lawsuit against Musk for misleading investors on the Twitter deal.

Three GOP Senators find a sliver of backbone, oppose Trump’s tariffs on Canada as stocks continue to crumble… Welp, with Trump’s tariffs targeted at Canada destroying the U.S. economy, three GOP senators are drawing the line. CNN reports, “GOP Sen. Susan Collins slammed proposed tariffs on Canada, warning that they would be particularly harmful to Maine and dismissing the Trump administration’s argument that the levies would pressure Canada in the fight against fentanyl trafficking… Collins also said that she intends to vote for a resolution aimed at blocking the tariffs against Canadian goods… The vote is expected tomorrow. GOP Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) also said that he is considering backing the resolution, and Republican Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has signed on as a cosponsor.” Such courage to state the obvious and point out that your constituents’ pocketbooks are taking a hit. Relatedly, NBC reports“Two of the three major U.S. stock indexes just wrapped up their worst quarter in well over two years. The third barely avoided the same fate. The S&P 500 dropped more than 4.5% for the first quarter of 2025 as of Monday’s close, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq plummeted 10.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average settled 1.3% lower and recorded its first back-to-back monthly loss since October 2023.”

Earthquake deaths in Myanmar and Thailand now exceed 2,000 with nearly 4,000 more injured… Myanmar and Thailand are reeling from a tragedy that deserves more U.S. news attention. In geopolitics, these countries don’t drive headlines as much as the heavy hitters, but human tragedy is human tragedy. ABC News reports, “A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake rattled much of Southeast Asia on Friday, resulting in mounting casualties and flattened skyscrapers from Myanmar to Thailand. The epicenter was in Mandalay, Myanmar, the country's second-largest city. Even Bangkok, some 600 miles away, felt widespread shaking and saw significant damage from the quake -- including the total collapse of a skyscraper under construction… Casualties are expected to rise as search and rescue efforts are underway in collapsed buildings in Myanmar and Thailand, officials said. In Myanmar, the death toll has climbed to 2,056, with more than 3,900 people injured and 270 people reported missing, according to the Myanmar Military Junta. In Bangkok, at least 13 people were killed in a building collapse in Chatuchak, according to the Bangkok Metro Authority.”

Judge halts firings of federal workers engaged in DEI work, reminding agencies of their own regulations… Politico reports, “A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration’s bid to fire intelligence agency employees who recently worked on DEI programs. U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga issued a preliminary injunction Monday requiring that the affected staffers at the CIA and Office of Director of National Intelligence remain on the payroll while they appeal their terminations and seek reassignment to open positions at their agencies… Trenga said CIA Director John Ratcliffe had made clear that the employees, who faced a 5 p.m. deadline Monday to resign or be fired, were being dismissed under a ‘reduction in force’ and that gave the employees certain protections.” Ruling from the bench, Trenga, a George W. Bush appointee, said, “The plaintiffs face termination without any suggestion of wrongdoing or poor performance. Simply requiring the government to follow its regulations is a minimal burden.”

Today’s Furry Friend

Some of our favorite furry friend content on the Internet can be categorized as “Odd Couples” – unexpected but infinitely adorable interspecies friendships. Sometimes motherly instinct kicks in without judgment of the different looks of a young furball in need of love. Babies lose their mamas or are rejected by them – nature can be brutal. But then another mama steps up.

We humans can spread love and find love from people whose background, experiences, or demographics are very different from our own. Everyone needs – and deserves – kindness and friendship in their lives. The world is too big and too interesting for us to only have friends who are just like ourselves.

Today’s Buzz

George R.R. Martin can’t stop causing “House of the Dragon” drama and we’re here for the off-screen mess… The next season of HBO’s original series “House of the Dragon” – a prequel to “Game of Thrones” – doesn’t come out until next year, but that hasn’t stopped the eccentric author behind the series from making headlines. We don’t take sides, at least not in the off-screen rivalries. Variety reports, “‘House of the Dragon’ showrunner Ryan Condal told Entertainment Weekly that ‘it was disappointing’ when George R.R. Martin came out swinging against the HBO series last year in a series of since-deleted blog posts. It all started in late August when the ‘Game of Thrones’ author wrote on his blog that he would soon post about ‘everything that’s gone wrong’ with ‘House of the Dragon.’ That post arrived in September, with Martin calling out specific changes Condal and his team made during Season 2 that Martin did not support. Martin also warned that ‘more toxic’ tweaks would be made in Season 3.”
