National Wildlife Federation Action Fund: Take Action for Beaver Habitat

Beaver

The Federal Government is about to finalize rules that will guide planning for massive water projects, like levees, dams, and seawalls, across the country—and we urgently need your voice to make sure crucial river, floodplain, and wetland habitats that beavers and other wildlife depend on are protected and restored.

Rivers, wetlands, and floodplains where beavers live are threatened by construction and structures. And what you may not know is these very same natural habitats that are home to beavers help people and communities survive.

Floodplains and wetlands can often provide storm damage prevention and flood control in place of built structures—but better! Unlike man-made structures, floodplains and wetlands provide vital wildlife habitat while also providing natural flood protection and filtering out pollutants for cleaner water. Beaver-created wetlands can also act as powerhouses for absorbing climate-harming CO2. Around the world, beaver ponds can store up to 470,000 metric tons of carbon each year and perform carbon-capture work worth tens of millions of dollars. There is no time to lose, please send a message in support of safeguarding and re-establishing wetland and floodplain habitats to benefit people, our planet and wildlife.

We have just one week, until April 15th, to submit comments to the US Army Corps of Engineers on the way future large-scale water projects will be planned. Your voice can be the difference between a planning process that protects the environment and listens to the public, or one that does not. Please help ensure that the Army Corps prioritizes the protection and restoration of our rivers, floodplains, and wetlands to safeguard people and wildlife. Tony, lend your voice now.

Your input will also help ensure that the Army Corps better accounts for the impacts of major projects on communities and the environment and fully engages with communities and Tribes during project planning. It is long past time to make environmental protection, restoration, and nature-based solutions fundamental drivers for project planning.

Thank you for stepping up for wildlife, our climate and nature-based solutions.
