CC Newsletter 15 Oct - UN Warns Of Ethnic Cleansing As Refugee Shelters Overflow In Gaza

UN human rights experts warned on Saturday: Palestinians in Gaza face mass ethnic cleansing as Israel orders half the population of the densely populated strip to evacuate amid continued aerial bombardment and dwindling resources on the ground. “In the name of self-defense, Israel is seeking to justify what would amount to ethnic cleansing,” UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese said, noting that “Israel has already carried out mass ethnic cleansing of Palestinian under the fog of war.”

by Countercurrents Collective

The Pentagon has ordered a second aircraft carrier strike group to the eastern Mediterranean near Israel to deter Iran or Hezbollah from joining the Israel-Hamas conflict. A senior U.S. official and a U.S. official told ABC News that the USS Eisenhower carrier strike group will be ordered to the eastern Mediterranean to join the USS Gerald R Ford carrier strike group that arrived there earlier this week and is in international waters off of Israel.

Listen to these Voices of Peace in the middle of all the violence in Gaza
by Bharat Dogra

In the middle of the rapid building up of a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, several important
voices have spoken for de-escalation and peace. In the USA as many as 50 democrat legislators have written to Present Biden that the mass evacuation in Gaza and other related actions should not result in serious violation of international humanitarian law.

All You Need Is Love
by George Capaccio

Has the price been paid?
Has the vengeance been enough?
Is it time for peace to raise its shattered head,
wave its old tattered flag,
and come crawling out of the trenches?

Palestine and India’s Fading Anti-Colonialism stand
by Abdul Moid

India’s growing intimacy with Israel does not just betray Palestine. It betrays the memories of countless Indian independence leaders and freedom fighters who were inspired by the moral dimension of their struggle. It abandons the legacy of Gandhi, Nehru and Azad who advocated non-violent
protest for human brotherhood.

14 October 2023 – A Poem
by Devdan Chaudhuri

In the city I live, no one drops any bombs.
There is no genocide, ethnic cleansing and collective punishment.
But this Saturday, I rage, I pray, I grieve, I scream;
While thinking about Palestine, Gaza and humanity.

A Losing Voice: The Fall of an Indigenous Referendum Measure
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

Even before October 14, The Voice, or, to describe in full, the Referendum on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament, was in dire straits.  Referenda proposals are rarely successful in Australia: prior to October 14, 44 referenda had been conducted since the creation of the Commonwealth in 1901.  Only eight had passed.

Feminism, Patriarchy & Equal Marriage Rights for LGBTQ – A Personal Dilemma
by Shobha Aggarwal

There are times when at a personal level I find it difficult to accept that the LGBTQ community also wants to emulate the patriarchal institution of marriage. But legally and constitutionally I firmly believe that all citizens of India should have the right to marry. Once all have equal rights only then the question of choice arises. But in my heart I do hope for a different kind of social structure based on equality with the help of my LGBTQ friends and not a perpetuation of the patriarchal institution of marriage.

Business Interests Deprive Citizens of Safety, Footpath and Road
by Bharat Dogra

We hear frequent reports of poor hawkers being hastily removed from footpaths and roads in front of residential areas with or without any complaint being made against them by
residents of the colony, even though they may be occupying a very small space. Now contrast this with what the citizens of South Park Apartments (Kalkajee area) in Delhi have been experiencing for a long time.
