Throughout his presidency, Eisenhower actively taxed himself and the country with a steeply progressive tax code and economic policy that restrained the accumulation of great wealth and directed it towards infrastructure, public schools, interstates, and other "public good" projects that served "the common good" at the deliberate expense of oligarchs, the wealthy, and corporate and personal greed. He lived out his convictions. He believed in dismantling the structures that oppress and punish the poor.
Even after the country reluctantly agreed to the military/industrial complex in order to win World War II, Eisenhower warned of the risks. The monster is still at large and has been devouring about half of our discretionary spending.
