Read Now: Harlan Crow’s Dual Citizenship in a Tax Haven
There’s a new development to the unfolding story of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s ethics scandal. Thomas has been under public scrutiny for failing to disclose lavish gifts from billionaire GOP donor Harlan Crow. Over the past two decades, Crow has given Thomas trips worth potentially millions of dollars. But there’s even more to the story: We just released an investigation — co-published with The Intercept — revealing that Harlan Crow bought citizenship in the island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, one of the world’s most secretive tax havens. Those who obtain citizenship in places like St. Kitts and Nevis often do so to take advantage of the financial secrecy of these jurisdictions and shield their assets and income from the U.S. government, begging the question: Is Clarence Thomas’s benefactor, Harlan Crow, hiding the full extent of his financial dealings from the U.S. government? What does this mean for the Clarence Thomas ethics revelations? Financial transparency experts say the island’s tax regime would make tracking Crow’s assets, including gifts to Supreme Court justices, extremely difficult. We may learn more in the coming weeks, as the Senate begins to investigate Thomas’s failure to report gifts from Crow. For now, read the breaking investigation on our website.
