Trump calling DeSantis "Meatball Ron" now, apparently

Trump's unwieldy "Ron DeSanctimonious" nickname never really took off the way he hoped, so now he's cycling in "Meatball Ron" to mock the Florida governor's appearance. Clearly, the 2024 Republican primary is going to be a race to the bottom.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: New Democratic star emerges with viral House speech

Rep. Jared Moskowitz took the entire Republican Party to the woodshed with a showstopping speech during the ludicrous, GOP-engineered hearing about the contents of Hunter Biden's laptop.

Judge orders partial release of Georgia special grand jury report investigating Trump's election-theft scheme
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney has ordered the partial release of a report by a special grand jury that investigated efforts by the would-be dictator Donald Trump and his crackpot allies to illegally overturn the 2020 election. The report’s introduction and conclusion, as well as a section in which the grand jurors expressed concerns that some witnesses may have lied under oath (shocking!), will be released on Thursday.

Mass shooting rocks Michigan State University
At least three people are dead and multiple others have been injured after a lone shooter opened fire on the Michigan State campus. While Republicans, armed with thoughts and prayers, will no doubt urge progressives not to "politicize" the incident, it must be stressed that these horrific, community-crushing tragedies could be curtailed if the GOP and NRA would support literally ANY common-sense gun safety legislation.

Take Action: Tell Congress to ban assault weapons!

6 North Carolina officers are on administrative leave after Black man dies after repeated tasings

Six Raleigh, North Carolina, cops are on administrative leave and yet another investigation is underway after Darryl Tyree Williams, 32, died shortly after an altercation with police during which he was tased multiple times. Officers were conducting what they ominously call “proactive patrols” of businesses with a history of criminal violations, when they spotted Williams in a parked car and say they detected alcohol and marijuana in the vehicle. An audibly distressed Williams can be seen and heard in the released body-cam footage telling the arresting officers that he has heart problems. Minutes later officers can be seen struggling to find Williams' pulse as EMS services were called to the scene.

Derailed Ohio train carried toxic ingredient for “worst” kind of plastic
The flames and deadly black smoke that billowed high over East Palestine, Ohio, Monday were an acute reminder of a type of commonly used plastic with a particularly troublesome environmental and health record — polyvinyl chloride, or PVC. While the drama played out in Northern Appalachia, the story actually begins with an insatiable global demand for plastic, and what United Nations officials describe as a “triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature loss, and pollution.”

West Virginia Public Broadcasting journalist ousted after pressure campaign from state Republicans angry over investigative reporting
In one story after another last year, WVPB's Amelia Ferrell Knisely uncovered damning allegations of people with disabilities being abused in state-run care facilities, and, well, that just wasn't going to fly, folks. Knisely was unceremoniously dismissed from her post, the latest victim of Republican Gov. and wealthy coal magnate Jim Justice's years-long, democracy-busting pressure campaign to crush the station.

CDC says teen girls are caught in an extreme wave of sadness and violence
America has a deep sickness at its core, and, as usual, it's the most vulnerable citizens who are suffering the consequences. Sexual attacks and other traumatic experiences have led to an unprecedented level of hopelessness and suicidal thoughts among America's young women, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday. Nearly 3 in 5 teen girls (57%) said they felt "persistently sad or hopeless." That's the highest rate in a decade. And 30% said they have seriously considered dying by suicide — a percentage that's risen by nearly 60% over the past 10 years.

Ron DeSantis throws fit and threatens to kill all AP courses in Florida
Florida's bigoted, book-banning governor is now threatening to reevaluate the state’s relationship with the College Board, the nonprofit company that administers Advanced Placement courses and the SAT exam. "Meatball Ron" (thanks, Donny!) has not made it clear exactly what he plans to change, but his remarks come after the College Board accused his administration of playing politics when it rejected its new Advanced Placement African American Studies course over allegations that it “lacks educational value.” As is always wise with Republican politicians, assume the worst and you'll land close to the truth.

Nikki Haley announces presidential run, asks voters to "get excited!"
The erstwhile Trump ally and enabler threw her proverbial hat in the soon-to-be crowded GOP ring and asked voters — in February 2023 — to "get excited!" about her 2024 candidacy. Can you feel it?!

Today’s Action: Pass federal abortion protections now!

President Biden echoed one recurring call to action throughout the State of the Union last week, from immigration policy to police reform to climate change — it’s time for us to finish the job. One of the most important jobs? Codifying the right to an abortion at the federal level. It is simply not enough to rely on blue-state facilities to serve as firewalls against the relentless legislative assault from anti-choice Republicans in red states; we must guarantee far-reaching reproductive healthcare throughout the most conservative nooks of our country.

Regardless of what conservatives would like to be true, America is not a theocracy. Over 60% of Americans support legal abortion access. A legislator’s job is not to play God, it’s to serve their communities. Overturning Roe v. Wade set an extremely dangerous precedent for the treatment of anyone who isn’t a straight, religious, white, cisgender male — especially after Justice Thomas indicated his intent to review other landmark rulings, like the ones that legalized gay marriage and fought for privacy in the bedroom. It’s time to take a stand.

Call (202-224-3121) or write your members of Congress and demand they finish the job and codify Roe v. Wade immediately!

What at first felt like a terrifying possibility became a grim reality for half the country following last summer’s disastrous SCOTUS ruling. Whether it’s donating to a local abortion fund, finding a rally, or writing to your members of Congress, your voice is needed in the struggle for federally protected abortion rights. You can find a comprehensive list of abortion funds to donate to here; states with conservative legislatures — Kentucky, Ohio, Alabama, Texas, and Louisiana, in particular — are in dire need of support in the face of unrelenting attacks on women’s healthcare.

Call (202-224-3121) or write your members of Congress to tell them to codify Roe v. Wade before the Supreme Court guts a woman’s right to choose!

PS — Please don't forget to sign the petition telling the Wyoming legislature to end child marriage, and be sure to follow us on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram.
