this supermarket merger will raise food prices

Two major grocery stores — Kroger and Albertsons — are planning to merge to create one of the largest grocery chains in the United States.

Like many massive corporations, even if you don’t recognize their names, chances are they own a grocery store that you do recognize:

  • Acme
  • Fred Meyer
  • Harris Teeter
  • Jewel-Osco
  • King Soopers
  • Mariano’s
  • Ralphs
  • Safeway
  • Shaw’s
  • Smith’s
  • Vons

And whether you recognize some of these names or not, the implications are clear:

As companies merge, they consolidate power in the hands of fewer people and reduce competition. Historically, the average consumer has fewer options after a merger and is worse-off as a result.

And big grocery mergers usually result in store closures — especially of union stores and those in vulnerable communities — leading to more food deserts.

With food prices rising, the last thing Americans need is a supermarket merger that will spike food prices even further.

The federal government is supposed to stop big mergers like this one that could reduce competition and lead to higher prices, lower quality, or less innovation.

Tell the Federal Trade Commission, the agency in charge of reviewing big mergers that hurt consumers:

You must reject the Kroger-Albertsons merger and protect the millions of consumers who shop at these stores from higher prices or lower quality.

Send your message to the Federal Trade Commission right away >>

Thanks for taking action,

George
