I received the news of the massacre at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas as I picked up my 6-year-old daughter from school.
Watching children exit school and reuniting with their parents after their school day was gut wrenching. So many parents in Texas will never pick up their child from school again.
We can’t keep accepting inaction. Every member of Congress who refuses to act on common sense gun safety needs to resign right now.
There's no reason the Senate can’t pass gun safety legislation to protect our children.
That’s why I’m running against Rand Paul, a Senator with a 92% NRA rating who’s accepted more money from the gun lobby than any other Senate candidate this year. Rand Paul has made it clear that he will always vote to please his friends from the gun lobby and make reform untenable.
He’s previously threatened to filibuster legislation banning assault rifles, the weapon used in recent mass shootings in Uvalde and Buffalo. Following Sandy Hook in 2012, Rand Paul went on national television and spoke in opposition to background checks. This week is no different, as Paul remains content using words, rather than power granted to him by the people of Kentucky, to protect our children. His thoughts and prayers are meaningless.
I have directly seen and felt the impact of gun violence. On Easter Sunday in 2016, my younger cousin TJ was shot and killed during an attempted robbery. And since then, I’ve lost another cousin to gun violence each year.
Guns are the leading cause of death for children in the U.S., and I’m determined to dismantle the corrupt foundation that the gun lobby has entrenched with Congressional Republicans. Now more than ever, legislative and executive action is necessary to prevent future mass killings, of our children or otherwise.
I believe we deserve to live in peace. I believe weapons of war should not be in our classrooms or in our streets. But Rand Paul does not give a damn about our safety or survival.
Thank you,
Charles
