Today’s Action: The vote on the For The People Act is coming!
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has promised the For The People Act will get a vote at the end of June, at which point every single Senator will be forced to state whether they are for democracy and voter rights, or against them.
We already know how this will almost certainly play out: not a single Republican will voting for this bill because: a) it runs in direct contradiction to their nationwide attack strategy to silence the voters who took away their power by introducing over 250 voter suppression bills in the states, and b) Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed to block every single Biden agenda item, just as he did with President Obama, in case any bipartisanship helps Democrats get re-elected. Bad faith actors, every single one of them.
With 49 Democratic Senators on board with the act and one on the fence, Democrats have only one clear route forward: they MUST pass the For The People Act with a simple majority, which means eliminating the filibuster to make it happen.
Call or email your Senators. Demand Democrats do EVERYTHING in their power to pass the For The People Act of 2021, including getting our missing moderate – Joe Manchin (WV) – on board and eliminating the Jim Crow filibuster. Tell Republicans you’ll be watching closely how they vote against our democracy.
The For The People Act is an overhaul of election accessibility, transparency, and security, and would override the wave of GOP anti-voter laws sweeping the nation. But with the rate at which fresh GOP voter suppression bills are passing at the state level, this could be the end of any Democratic majority in Congress as we know it, and a strengthening of deep GOP strongholds at the state level. Unless the For The People Act is passed soon, our 2022 midterm elections will be missing millions of freshly suppressed Democratic voters.
Our Senators must understand the urgency of the situation. The For the People Act is exactly what our democracy needs at this moment, and we elected them to deliver it.
