Voting rights attorney Marc Elias warns that the Trump Department of Justice is aggressively seeking access to Americans’ most sensitive voter data—including Social Security numbers, party affiliation, voting history, and signatures—by suing more than 20 states. Elias explains why this unprecedented data grab is central to a broader strategy of voter suppression, election subversion, and litigation designed to undermine free and fair elections in 2026 and beyond. Drawing on decades of experience and current court battles, he breaks down how voter files work, how they can be weaponized, and why DOJ control of this data could fundamentally reshape elections, from voter challenges to targeted suppression laws and post-election challenges. Meanwhile, Elon Musk is doing who knows what to the vast federal government and workforce.

Notably, when Trump met with the nation’s governors, his mind wandered back to his deepest obsession and the glue that holds together the disparate pieces of his MAGA movement — undermining free and fair elections.

Trump spent the most time discussing paper ballots and eliminating early voting. He claimed, "Computers are not meant for voting… it's too many transactions taking place too quickly." He falsely asserted that eliminating electronic voting equipment would cut costs and that watermarks could make paper ballots "highly sophisticated." He insisted, "If you have mail-in voting, you're going to have massive fraud."

In his most coherent moment, he outlined his restrictive vision of voting…

You're reading a preview of Marc's weekly tip sheet where he debriefs the news from the weekend and lays out the trends and stories to watch in the week ahead. In this tip sheet, Marc dives into:

  • Trump and the RNC’s plans for voter suppression

  • How he’s using federal agencies to execute those plans

  • John Roberts’ dilemma on the Supreme Court

  • What happens if the White House ignores court orders
