Government shutdown

As you likely know, the federal government is currently in a shutdown. The reason for that is because President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” has placed Michigan into a health care crisis. The cost of health care was bad before, and now, starting this month, everyone reading this is about to get a notice of a rise in health care costs for January 1, 2026. Trump is making us poorer and sicker in the nine months he has been in office.

I did not support the Republican Continuing Resolution on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Republicans need 60 votes to pass a bipartisan budget, and this funding bill had no input from Democrats. They didn’t come and talk to us, but somehow hoped we’d vote to support their plan. Since July, I have been very clear: any conversation about my vote needs to start with health care.

Look, Republicans control the White House, Senate, and the House – so I understand that negotiations won’t result in Democrats getting everything we want. But serious adults can sit down, negotiate in good faith, and pass a budget. We saw this happen with the Michigan State Budget just the other day.

To be clear, we don’t know how President Trump is going to handle a government shutdown. Right now, his Administration is illegally cancelling federal funding to major infrastructure projects. But as Democrats, now is the time to stand up and use our voices. And there are few more important fights to have than lowering costs for health care.

I have gotten many questions about the practical effects of the shutdown on Michigan. While the shutdown is taking place, Social Security benefits will still go out, Medicare and Medicaid benefits will continue, veterans’ benefits will continue, and U.S. Passport Agency and U.S.-Canada border crossings will be staffed. But as the shutdown goes on, certainly things can change.

More personally, I have made the decision to withhold my salary for the duration of the shutdown. Passing a bipartisan budget is a core function of Congress, and until that happens, I will join our troops and federal workers in not accepting a salary until the shutdown is over – hopefully soon.

We all know that this is uncharted territory. But as Michigan’s Senator, I feel that it is my responsibility and obligation to make life better for our middle class. And right now that means doing everything in my power to lower health care costs.

Thank you for reading,

Elissa

United States Senators often keep on fundraising after their election ends, but Elissa doesn't want to keep bombarding your inbox with fundraising requests.

What we will do is send you good, timely content – like this message. Stuff you might open without dread.

But she does hope you may consider making a small, monthly recurring contribution. Even just $5 or $10 – so we don't have to send those mass fundraising emails while Elissa is focused on her work as a Senator.

Brendan Carr and Tom Homan – and what we can do

President Trump has been flooding the zone with new actions and information since January 20th. It’s hard to keep up. So today I want to flag two things from last week that deserve your attention.

The first is about President Trump’s FCC Director, Brendan Carr, carrying out a coordinated attack on our free speech right out of the pages of Project 2025.

Project 2025 Tweet

The next day President Trump's Department of Justice is shutting down an investigation into Tom Homan, the “Border Czar” in the White House, who allegedly accepted a $50,000 cash bribe in a paper bag from undercover FBI agents.

We cannot become numb to this. And we can fight back.

The lessons on how to fight back can be found in what we did during Trump's first administration – particularly on health care. Back then, Trump and House Republicans repealed the Affordable Care Act. It ended up dying in the Senate.

How did we do that? We educated people – normal people who don't have time to doom-scroll or watch cable news. We mobilized Americans across the country, in both parties.

We can do it again – especially after President Trump made big health care cuts in his "Big Beautiful Bill." It is what I am trying to do with rallies, speeches and town halls across Michigan and stops in a few other states.

But I need your help to continue that work, because there are costs associated with those efforts, and obviously, we spent down our fundraising in order to win the election.

Can you please contribute $5, $50, or whatever you can afford to my campaign? I will put your donation to continue cutting through the noise and organizing to stop President Trump's efforts to take away our health care.

What J.D. Vance said in Michigan

J.D. Vance was in Michigan yesterday, trying to rebrand President Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill" ahead of the mid-term elections.

It’s no surprise – Michigan will again be the center of the political universe in 2026.

The Vice President talked a little bit about the bill, but there was a lot left unsaid.

The Vice President did not mention that manufacturing jobs are down for the 4th month in a row.

The Vice President did not mention that housing costs are up nearly 5%.

The Vice President did not mention that Michiganders have started to get letters that their healthcare costs are going up between 10-20% next year.

No matter how much Vance tries to rebrand President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” Michiganders know their own pocketbooks and how much they can or cannot save every month.

And the facts speak for themselves.

Getting that message out ahead of the next election will be critical to Democrats' chances of taking back the House and the Senate – both of which are in play here in Michigan.

Elissa needs your help getting it done:

Can you please make a $5 contribution to Elissa Slotkin's campaign in Michigan? We will put the funds we raise to work campaigning and turning out Democrats here in Michigan.
