40 weeks ago, we drove to the edge of the Florida Everglades and stood outside a detention facility in the sweltering heat. There was a lone sign that said "Alligator Alcatraz" on the side of Rt 41, miles through the entrance. We knew there were people detained, 32 to a cage, who couldn't get word to their families about where they'd been taken or why. We didn't know how long we'd be doing this. We only knew that we would be there for as long as it takes – because we refuse to be silent in the face of this inhumane detention machine. Here we are: This weekend marks week 40 of our vigil outside Alligator Alcatraz – 40 consecutive weeks of showing up, demanding change, and refusing to let a facility designed to be invisible stay that way. Forty weeks of buses, of organizing, of people who are detained. Their families are reeling from their abductions and they’ve told us that seeing people outside when the buses trundle them from another detention center into this hellscape cruelly-named Alligator Alcatraz and standing together against this horror is the only thing that makes them feel like they haven't been completely abandoned. We've stayed through the rain. Through summer heat that makes the Everglades feel like a furnace. Through weeks when the news moved on and it would have been easy to move on with it. We didn't move on, because the people inside didn't get to either. And now our recurring vigils are spreading across Florida and the entire country. This sustained work is thanks to people like you – making donations of $15, $30, or even $100 along the way. Can we count on your solidarity to keep these vigils running for as long as it takes Vigils work because they are impossible to dismiss. This administration wants us to believe that there’s nothing that we can do in the face of this injustice – that there aren’t enough of us in this country to force change. But they’re wrong. Each of these vigils shows our strength – that we refuse to look away and refuse to be silent. We are compelled to action by the suffering of our fellow human beings. It’s proof that the soul of America is still very much alive. We believe that with all of our hearts, because we’re seeing those ideals spread to likeminded fighters in real time. What started at Alligator Alcatraz is now inspiring vigils at ICE detention facilities across Florida and across the country. Here’s a short list: Pompano Beach, FL (Broward Transitional Center) Fourteen vigil sites. One unbroken idea: the people inside deserve to be treated as human beings who are protected by our Constitution. And the people outside have the power to demand that.
